When will I develop menopause?

The average age for women to experience menopause symptoms and stop menstruating is between 40-55 years.  Menopause is considered to have begun when you have not menstruated for at least 12 months.  Symptoms such as hot flashes may occur before you entre menopause.  When this happens, this transitional period is call perimenopause.  Perimenopause can last 2-8 years, depending on the individual, and it is still possible for a woman to become pregnant during this time.  Of course, these are only guidelines and your body is unique.  Some women may experience very early onset of menopause symptoms, while others may not lose their periods until much later.  At CGC Chicago, we understand the importance of delivering personalized care to our patients, so they can receive the menopause care that is right for them, no matter how early or late their symptoms develop.

Why does menopause occur?

Menopause is a natural part of the aging process and happens as a result of the ovaries ceasing to produce the important hormones progesterone and estrogen.  However, menopause can sometimes also be induced because of a surgical procedure such as hysterectomy or as a side effect of certain medications.  In addition to some of the symptoms you may be familiar with, women who are menopausal also have a greater chance of developing osteoporosis, heart disease, or having a stroke.  Because of this, it is important to speak with your doctor not only about your menopause side effects, but about your overall health and ways you can protect it.  An excellent first step is to make sure you heat healthy foods, exercise regularly, and stop smoking if you have not already done so.

What treatments are available for menopause symptoms?

The most common and effective treatment for addressing menopause is estrogen-based hormone therapy.  Vaginal estrogen can be used to address intimate issues that may be the result of menopause including vaginal dryness or painful sex, and even some urinary symptoms you may develop.  Antidepressants may not seem like an obvious menopause treatment, but certain selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) can address hot flashes for women who cannot or do not wish to take hormones.  These SSRIs are delivered in very low doses to minimize the risk of negative side effects. Gabapentin and clonidine are drugs used to address seizures and high blood pressure, respectively.  However, some studies have shown they may provide relief from hot flashes as well for women who are not good candidates for hormone therapy and/or cannot use an anti-depressant.  You may also wish to address potential bone loss with your doctor, who may prescribe vitamin D supplements or other medications to address osteoporosis.
