Vaginismus is a term that has traditionally been utilized to describe “vaginal spasms” or hypertonic pelvic floor muscle contractions. Vaginismus is a condition of involuntary contraction of the pelvic floor muscle group leading to painful and/or impossible vaginal penetration. Vaginismus is a physical disorder separate from disorders of pain, such as vulvodynia, that can cause vaginal spasm and it is a psychologic disorder that is personified by anxiety and fear of penetration. Many times vaginismus can be a leading cause of unconsummated relationships/marriage and can occur concurrently with erectile dysfunction or premature ejaculation disorders. It impacts a variety of women but is commonly seen in Southeast Asian, Arab and Muslim women in general .
